Background
I’ve been walking and photographing mountains for over thirty five years. As a boy I used film cameras, a home darkroom, and more modest subjects.
My favourite places are Scotland, the Lake District, Snowdonia, Peak District and the Pyrenees where I have so far undertaken six major walks, camping in the mountains. In addition to wild camping, I like camp sites and day walks.
I have a Masters degree in Photography and Postgraduate Certificate in Education. The professional teaching qualification, when I trained for the Further Education sector.
Teaching
I taught in several colleges covering all aspects of photography. My courses included film and darkroom methods, computers and digital workflow, camera use, editing, critical thinking, composition, art, and outdoor projects. A head of department, observing me, advised “you know you’re a good teacher.”
Prints
My photographs are taken with a Canon 5D and L Series lenses. For the last 10 years, a Sony A7R with Zeiss lenses. This means high quality results. I use C-Type photographic printing using Fuji Professional paper. Dark room technology, which is archival.
I Ching
For some years I thought about walking and the outdoors philosophically, but it’s a limited subject. There’s only so much you can say, and it’s already been said. The I Ching is a nature related, deep philosophical system. It’s impossible to summarise but I sometimes explain how it’s connected to the Tao Te Ching, which people have often read.
Presentation
I built my web site with WordPress and basic technical knowledge. It needs some more coding which is beyond me. The layout on section pages sometimes breaks. The result is a scrapbook aesthetic, not bad, not what I wanted, but it’s hard to correct. It doesn’t optimise for phones, works well for tablets and desktops, although you might want to enlarge the text on a big screen.
